Project Proposal

Dont know how good this is. I'm rusty rusty... almost like our mittens.

Section 1

Collaboration. After careful thought and consideration I have decided to team up with a fellow student for my final major project. Me and Emily, my partner, will be producing 8 or more outfits which go by the title of Restrictions. These outfits will be a combination of ready to wear and couture pieces for the catwalk, inspired by a variation of restrictions including torture, locks, keys, knots, phobias, and emotional restrictions. We intend to take what we have learnt over the last year and a half and push it further, for an exciting collection which pushes the boundaries of design, print and manipulation.

Section 2

As this project theme is quite broad it is important that we research intensively in primary, artist and secondary forms. We intend to photograph every restriction we see in everyday life, as well as visiting museums, especially in London, such as The Fashion and Textiles museum and The V&A. Books will help us discover more about our subject, as well as reliable websites.

Section 3

Over our time on the course we have picked up many techniques and processes, but for our final major project we shall be using them in ways that are innovative and experimental. We want to test techniques with other materials such as wood, metals or plastics, pushing those boundaries as much as possible, yet making it natural to the garment at hand. Me and Emily will be tracking our project weekly, however we aim to have most of the sketchbook done after approximately a month so that we can concentrate on toiling and creating the garments.

Section 4

As this is a collaborative piece, it is important that me and Emily are showing our own ideas in our separate sketchbook, however, we have agreed that it would be a good idea to work into each others sketchbook to analyse each others work, and then we can work on what the partner has commented. This will mean that we are constantly critically reviewing each other, meaning we achieve our best work. Also, we have a blog, in which we can use to share ideas outside of college hours, a constant communication. Every sample I produce and research I find will be noted with my thoughts so I can visually communicate to the reader and analyse my work which will end in an evaluation which will conclude the project.

Face Corsets babe!

Project Proposel :)

Section One:
For my FMP (Final Major Project), another classmate and I have decided to do a collaborative project together called RESTRICTIONS. Together we aim to complete an experimental and technically challenging collection that consists of at least eight garments, four of which will be made up of both Jessica's (my project partner) and my own ideas and the other four will be two garments soley my own ideas, and the other two soley Jesses designs. We will be prodcuing an Autumn/Winter womenswear collection for 2011/12 that will contain both ready-to-wear and couture pieces. We plan to challenge our pattern cutting skills and printing techniques as much as possible to produce an individual professional outcome.

Section two:
To influence our collecton, we will be researching into different types of restrictions that can be found. These may include barriers, locks, society's views, fears and pain. We will gather research by visiting exhibitions like the Medical Museum, The Sex Museum and the Wellcome Collection, photographing items and talking to people about restrictions that they might feel (particularly emotional).  We will look at designers like Una Burke, Alexander McQueen, Martina Salzberger, Paddy Hartley and Louise Goldins.

Section three:
As well as exploring with different fabrics, Jess and I wanted to extend our sampling to use a  variety of different materials including woods, plastics and metals. We will experiment using different fabric manipulation methods ad incorporate these different materials into the processes we use. We will also be creating a print which consists of at least two different colours. We will spend around 1 month constantly sketchbooking, gathering and noting down our ideas and then spend the rest of the time developing and creating the garments.

Section four :
To keep track of our progress through the project Jess and I will be documenting our work in our sketchbooks, but also communicate our ideas on a collaborative blog. We will keep track of meetings that we have and post minutes and any other ideas that we come up with outside of college onto the blog. Throughout the project Jess and I will also be going through each others sketchbooks and noting down what we think about each others work - What ideas we like, or what ideas inspire us.

Oh! :) Look, what I found at London Fashion Week. :)

I got his card.

it's leather. Some thing like, and to try out maybe?

ALSO! We need to get the title picture done. :) This blog look too plain for my likings.

Dear Jess. 'tas been too long.

Right, so I had a look at the colours schemes and I quite like the chic one from the first link. I think the pinkish colours gives the scheme that bit of pop that we wanted to have and its good to have it as an option, also it might be better for using print.

HOWEVER!!!    :)
Our project is based on restrictions, and the second link that you showed me will do just that. I want to use the second one, that is of course, if you would like to aswell. I think for print (which I want to do please:) ) it will push us  to find a way that doesnt made it look like mud. Also it has the dark feeling that we're going for. So if you're good with this one. I am too.

Right. I'm not quite sure what you wanted me to do with the brainstorm thing. So I'm just going to brainstorm off the words you put down and any more that I can think of, but i think you have pretty much all of them there. I shall see you on Monday partner :).

Goodbye for now. x

I really hope not.

[A post for my partner.]

My dear emily,

I have decided to dedicate this day to our project. I have just brainstormed restrictions and theres so much we could do. I feeling really good about this now, I think we could create some pretty amazing pieces here. It's still two days until we are to meet and start, so I thought I'd leave you with my brainstorm, and then you could deliver your thoughts and I could deliver mine, on monday. Also if you want to brainstorm too and do the same for me? I think it could be pretty interesting to see your side of my brainstorm compared to mine. Just a thought. But yeah..

RESTRICTIONS.

Fetishes
Prison
Safety restrictions- health and safety
locks and keys
politics- government
fears
age
religion
bondage
emotional - gender change/sexuality/abusive relationships
family
society
diseases
fences
borders to other countries
those leads that babies have (haha)

Some of these we have discussed previously. But my thoughts are shared for now.

Love!

Speak to you when I'm back Emily.

Tied and Bound.

Okay Jess, I'm on the hunt now. I found this, if you want to take a look. I'm not too keen on the whole bondage horse strap thing they've got going on, but the full face and the half face (I prefer the half face), I think that could be verrryyyyyyyyy interesting. :D

That's all for now. x

So inspiring!

Emily ....

A really great article, could tie in maybe. x

Meeting One - So it's official now. :)

Okay so today Jess and I had our first meeting. So it's official. We've had the thumbs up from our tutor, the thumbs up from external examiners and we've both agreed that we want to do this. A collaboration on our FMP (final major project). I think it's time to get started. :)

Meeting One.

The first thing that we had to do was to decide on the base of our project. We sat down and had look at the list of words that all the students had contributed towards, to spark off ideas for projects. We started by eliminating words that we definatly didn't want to use. Finding this difficult, we switched and started to point out which ones we thought would be best to use. Still unsuccessfull we discussed what aspects we definatly wanted our collection to have.

Emily - Experimental, experimenting with multipul colours in print.
Jess - Use of materials, not just fabrics.
Emily and Jess - Innovative, main focus pieces and then more wearable pieces.
NO GIRLY NESS!!!

From there we start talking about any ideas that we already had for projects and what we enjoyed doing most.

Jess suggested addictions, looking at smoking and actually using cigarettes and burning. She also said that she enjoyed corsetry, which reminded me of an idea I'd had of contrasting restrictions with freedom.

Interested by this we brainstormed and got the following.

Freedom.
- expression
-room/space

Restrictions.
- following a path/streets
-Health and safety
-Laws
-Stories about Zimbabwe in newspapers
-Disabilities
-Age
-Home life
-Straight jackets/ Insanity
-Religion

With the obvious choice of words staring us in the face we decided to go with Restrictions, as our project title as it is open to endless possibilities. JOY for such enthusiatic designers like ourselves. ;)

And lastly we threw around some ideas of gathering research, by photographing everyday restrictions and interviewing people who have felt restricted. Still need to dig around for exhibitions and designers though.

I see beauty at the end of this.
I really do.

-Emily. (:

A welcome is due.

So, here we are.

Months ago two fashion students created blogs, got insanely obsessed with them, and rocked their blog crits.

These blogs are their babies, but a connection developed. These two aren't lovers, no. Much more exciting... they are teaming up!

Hello, I'm Jessica. Just a quick welcome into mine and Emily's new blog, rusty mittens. Basically we have decided to collaborate for our Final Major Projects and will be recording our progress on this blog, so exciting events for you to follow.

Me and Emily have chosen to team up after a chance to work with each other on fashion film project. The film was amazing and really helped us realise what we could achieve if we collaborated more often. We then were working on our garments and we both agree that we have similar design ideas, but we also have strengths and weaknesses that balance us as a team.

So

If your smart, you will keep tuned.
This is some seriously exciting stuff.

- Jessica.
